Celebrating 65 Years of Science, Education, and Exploration
This special issue of the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies marks the 65th Anniversary of the NSS with invited manuscripts from some of the top speleological researchers in their respective fields. This issue presents a rich combination of the new and important areas of studies being conducted and cave and karst, as well as an historical perspective of studies done under the auspices of the NSS. While cave exploration, speleogenesis, cave anthropology, and cave biology dominated earlier research efforts and are still significant, the study of caves and karst has expanded greatly. Now, advanced studies in geomicobiology, human health risk assessment, biogeography, speleogenesis in unique environments (e.g., carbonate islands), paleoclimatology, and other fields of studies are now significant as well. The National Speleological Society (NSS) has been provided significant support for cave and karst research for 65 years, and this issue is a significant landmark for speleology.
